Third Term for IB Chief Tapan Deka 'but' with a Tech-Focused Reset?

Sources indicate that Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka is likely to be granted a  third term, underscoring continuity in India’s internal security leadership amid a complex threat landscape. While an official announcement is awaited, indications within security circles suggest that the extension is being seriously considered at the highest levels.

At the same time, a significant internal recalibration may accompany the extension. Sources point to the possibility of a renewed team within the IB, with a sharper focus on emerging domains such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data-driven intelligence gathering. This restructuring is seen as part of a broader effort to modernize the agency’s capabilities in response to evolving threats, including digital espionage, cyber intrusions, and information warfare.

Officials familiar with the developments suggest that the proposed changes aim to integrate technological expertise more deeply into intelligence operations, aligning with global trends in security architecture.

If confirmed, Deka’s continued leadership, combined with a tech-oriented overhaul, could signal a strategic shift in how India’s premier intelligence agency prepares for next-generation security challenges.
